Childhood obesity is a massive issue in many nations around the globe. A key element in preventing this issue in your household is having a good knowledge base of nutrition.

Incorporating foods such as fruits and vegetables may seem like a battle waiting to happen, but if you approach and prepare them in the right way you can win this one. It will definitely mean more work for you in the necessary shopping and preparation, but it’s a very important step in ensuring your child battles the obesity epidemic.

Whether your child is already overweight or you are doing your part to ensure that doesn’t happen, you should keep these foods in mind as a rule of thumb. By including these food choices as regular staples in your child’s healthy eating plan, you are providing them with all the right nutrients that they need and helping to easily limit their fat and calorie intake. Here are some of the basics:

* Lean Proteins: Your child is likely already eating some forms of protein, but it’s likely that not much thought has been given to the type you provide. Putting together meals that are high in protein and lower in fat benefits everyone involved. Be sure to include skinless chicken breasts, lean pork chops, lean ground beef, steaks with the visible fat cut off, and so on. When making a recipe that uses ground beef for example go for a low fat version or substitute ground turkey-your kids will never know the difference. Try using veggie burgers or tofu as regular meal ideas that will give a huge amount of protein without the fat and calories of their alternatives.

* Fruits and Vegetables: It’s inevitable that you need to bump up the fruits and vegetables that your child eats. It’s highly probable that they are not getting enough of these nutrient filled goodies and this is where your role as a parent becomes quite important. You won’t get every child to love lima beans, but you can come up with creative ways to present things so that they are more likely to eat them. Make salads for dinner that incorporate chicken, some colorful veggies like peppers and pea pods, and let them make their own which can be fun and quite nutritious. Slice up apples and serve with peanut butter for a healthy and delicious snack. Figuring out creative ways to get your child to eat these can make all the difference and ensure that they get what they need in a day.

* Whole Grains: By making the switch from carbohydrates made with white flour to whole grains, you can bump up the nutritional value exponentially. This is a rather easy switch as you can find some excellent options these days and most of the times kids won’t even notice. Start buying whole grain or whole wheat bread instead of white for sandwiches or toast.
Use whole wheat pasta instead of white with sauce or in soup. Buy the whole grain version of things whenever offered such as in English muffins or crackers. Use wheat flour in baking for the same yummy treats but with a major bump in the nutrients.

* Beans & Legumes: This may not be an area that you’ve focused much attention on with your kid’s diet. Including these powerful foods can be incredibly powerful for your kid’s general health and they are easy to include. Add beans to soups or even sauces to pump things up. Throw some chick peas on salads that will add taste and a lot of nutrients. Create a snack out of whole grain crackers and hummus which kids are sure to love. These foods are naturally lower in fat but offer many vitamins and minerals for a fraction of the calorie cost.

* Dairy Products: You are hopefully already pushing your child to drink their milk as this is essential for growth and simple body functions. That being said, you should also be including other dairy products as part of their healthy diet. You can find some great low fat versions of everything from yogurt to cheese to sour cream. Including items such as low fat yogurt and string cheese are delicious options that kids will be happy to eat, and they offer an excellent nutritional value at the same time.
